What happened
After the Rapid Support Forces seized El Fasher on October 26, 2025 following an 18-month siege, the ICC Office of the Prosecutor said on November 3, 2025 it was alarmed by reports of mass killings and rape allegedly committed there and was preserving evidence. In January 2026, Deputy Prosecutor Nazhat Shameem Khan told the UN Security Council her office had video, audio and satellite evidence of war crimes and crimes against humanity in El Fasher, describing a systematic campaign targeting non-Arab communities, and said her office is also documenting alleged crimes by the Sudanese Armed Forces. The statements say the conduct may amount to war crimes and crimes against humanity under the Rome Statute. These are prosecutor's assessments; no arrest warrants for current-war conduct had been announced in these sources.
