What happened
Byron Donalds, a U.S. Representative and the Republican candidate for Florida governor, filed two hand-delivered letters with the House Clerk amending previously filed annual financial disclosure reports. In a letter stamped June 4, 2026 (Filing ID 9115902), he wrote that his reports for 2021, 2022, 2023 and 2024 "did not include disclosure of certain liabilities" and added a September 2021 U.S. Department of Education student loan (filer and dependent child; $15,001 to $50,000 in 2021, $100,001 to $250,000 in 2022 and 2023, $250,001 to $500,000 in 2024) and a July 2024 CrossCountry Mortgage mortgage on a personal residence ($500,001 to $1,000,000) in the 2024 report. In a letter stamped Aug. 13, 2026 (Filing ID 9116277), he wrote that his reports for 2020 through 2024 "did not include disclosure of my spouse's 401k she holds with through her employer" and added a Nuveen Lifecycle Index 2045 Fund R6 Class holding valued at $5,001 to $15,000 in 2020 and $50,001 to $100,000 in 2024. House Ethics Committee instructions require Members to report mortgages on personal residences, student loans and holdings in a spouse's 401(k) plan. The letters do not say what prompted the amendments. Florida Bulldog reported on Oct. 5, 2026 that the House Ethics Committee reviews such amendments and generally accepts them without penalty if it considers the errors an honest mistake; the records reviewed do not show any committee action on these amendments. A Donalds campaign spokesman, Gates McGavick, told Florida Bulldog: "Byron Donalds is committed to disclosure and like most Congressional Members, voluntarily updates his disclosures to ensure ongoing compliance." He declined to answer questions about why the items were not originally reported.
