What happened
Pakistan's Commission of Inquiry on Enforced Disappearances, set up in March 2011, had 'disposed of' 8,873 cases by August 2025, according to Dawn; the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan calls official figures vastly underreported. Dawn's 2024 reporting on the commission's own figures showed that of 10,285 cases received by 30 June 2024, 1,002 people were located in internment centres, 671 in prisons and 277 were found dead. Dawn also reported that in 2025 the Balochistan Assembly amended its anti-terrorism law to allow detention without charge for up to three months. The UN Committee against Torture, in findings issued 1 May 2026, raised concerns about enforced disappearances, arbitrary detention and torture of critics.
