The UN Human Rights Council's Independent International Fact-Finding Mission on Iran, in its report A/HRC/55/67 presented in March 2024, found that Jina Mahsa Amini's September 2022 death in morality police custody was unlawful and caused by physical violence, rejecting the government's account of a pre-existing medical condition. The Mission documented that Iranian security forces used unnecessary and disproportionate lethal force during the subsequent crackdown, killing more than 500 people -- including at least 49 women and 68 children -- and detaining over 22,000, with a documented pattern of security forces intentionally targeting protesters' eyes. It concluded the violations, including patterns of rape and sexual violence against detainees, amount to crimes against humanity committed as part of a widespread attack on women and girls. As of the report, the Iranian government had not responded to 20 letters the Mission sent seeking information and access.
