What happened
On 19 April 2025 a Tunis court sentenced dozens of opposition politicians, lawyers, activists and businesspeople (Amnesty counts 40, Human Rights Watch 37) to between 4 and 66 years in prison on charges of conspiracy against state security, in a trial Human Rights Watch says had three hearings. On 27 November 2025 an appeals court upheld the sentences of 34 of 37 defendants, ranging from 5 to 45 years, per Human Rights Watch. Amnesty International called the verdict a 'parody of justice' based on peaceful exercise of rights; the authorities' position is not reported in the sources reviewed.
