What happened
After the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) retook Wad Madani and Gezira State from the RSF in January 2025, the UN Fact-Finding Mission for Sudan reported in September 2025 that the SAF and its allies targeted the Kanabi community, killing dozens and forcing most residents to flee. Human Rights Watch documented an attack on Tayba village on January 10, 2025 by the SAF-allied Sudan Shield Forces that killed at least 26 people, and Christian Solidarity Worldwide reported at least 21 deaths among Kanabi and South Sudanese people. A CNN investigation with Lighthouse Reports, using satellite imagery, whistleblowers and video, reported ethnically targeted killings between October 2024 and May 2025 with bodies dumped in irrigation canals. The SAF has called abuses 'individual transgressions', according to HRW.
