What happened
On 31 July 2025 President Prabowo Subianto, with the approval of the House of Representatives, granted abolition to former trade minister Thomas Lembong, who had been sentenced to 4.5 years in a sugar-import graft case and was preparing to appeal, and amnesty to PDI-P secretary-general Hasto Kristiyanto, who had been sentenced to 3.5 years for bribery in a case linked to Harun Masiku. The Law Minister cited the national interest, political unity and the two men's past contributions to the country. Former KPK investigator Praswad Nugraha said the amnesty violates constitutional principles, and Indonesia Corruption Watch and Transparency International Indonesia also criticised it. The Attorney General's Office and the KPK said they would review the legal basis.
