What happened
The European Public Prosecutor's Office (EPPO) announced on June 18, 2025 that it detained eight people, including four Slovak Ministry of Defence officials, in an investigation into suspected misappropriation of about EUR 7.4 million in EU military-aid funds. EPPO suspects that senior ministry officials gave unjustified orders to buy ammunition from two private companies for donation to Ukraine, that the public procurement was rigged and the ammunition overpriced, and that reimbursement claims were then submitted to the European Peace Facility in February and March 2022. The Spectator and Balkan Insight reported that Slovak police separately tried to detain former Defence Minister Jaroslav Nad, who was on holiday abroad. Nad's party called the action politically motivated, and he has said the donation was lawful and urgent. Two detainees were released without charge; these are suspicions, not findings.
