What happened
In testimony to the Legislative Assembly's Political Commission as one of 18 candidates for Court of Accounts magistrate, reported by El Mundo on August 19, 2026, José Arnoldo Gaitán Castro, a judge of accounts, said that in 2016 the then-president of the Corte de Cuentas de la República asked him to help "clean" irregularities found in audits of officials, which he said he refused. He said magistrates, deputies and mayors later sought similar help and that he gave them the same answer. Asked whether corruption persists at the institution, he said it does, among judges, audit directors, staff and coordinators, and called for a thorough clean-out. These are his statements; the article does not name the 2016 official and no finding supports the claims.
