What happened
On 28 July 2026 Iran executed Abdolfazl Sepahi Badjani and Amir Hossein Safari Hosseinabadi at Alikhani Square in Isfahan on charges including moharebeh over the killing of police during January 2026 protests. Reports say 12 to 14 people were tried together and sentenced to death; the UN Special Rapporteur said the proceedings were closed-door and contravened fair-trial standards, and Amnesty International called the executions an escalation in using the death penalty to crush dissent. Iranian judiciary media said the men had also set a police station on fire.
