What happened
The UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) documented judicial corporal punishment against at least 137 people (112 men and 25 women) in Afghanistan between April 1 and June 30, 2026; some of these punishments were carried out publicly, and UNAMA's update does not say how many. UNAMA said the de facto Supreme Court has not publicly announced corporal punishments on its website or social media since April 22, though local court officials carried out punishments in some provinces, in some cases with attendance limited mainly to court officials. Afghanistan International reports that the last flogging announcement by the Taliban Supreme Court was dated April 22, 2026. A separate report published August 25, 2026 by the Afghanistan Human Rights and Democracy Organisation counted 2,745 people publicly flogged across 634 incidents between February 2022 and April 2026.
