What happened
Following recommendations in the Auditor-General's 2024 report, Fiji's Ministry of Education ran a payroll verification exercise that identified 13 'ghost employees', former ministry staff who kept receiving salaries during the 2024 financial year, according to Education Minister Aseri Radrodro (Fiji Times). Separately, the exercise stopped pay for 134 officers in Pay 18/2026 who had been issued permanent appointment contracts in 2025 but had not returned signed copies, and found a former teacher whose contract expired on January 26, 2025 kept being paid until Pay 18/2026.
