The Daily Star reported that five senior journalists (Farzana Rupa, Shakil Ahmed, Mozammel Haque Babu, Shyamal Dutta and Shahriar Kabir) had been detained 592 to 620 days without formal charges in murder cases linked to the July 2024 uprising. A High Court bail order for Rupa and Ahmed on 20 January 2025 was suspended two days later by the Supreme Court, and UN experts raised concern on 7 March 2025 about detention without evidence of direct participation. Prothom Alo reported that the Police Bureau of Investigation found no evidence against 28 journalists in Chattogram, that journalist Anis Alamgir received bail on 14 March 2026, and that Transparency International Bangladesh counted 266 journalists accused in violence-related cases. A police spokesperson said investigators are reviewing each case carefully.
