What happened
On January 7, 2025, the US Treasury's Office of Foreign Assets Control sanctioned Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo ('Hemedti'), commander of Sudan's Rapid Support Forces, under Executive Order 14098. The same day, the State Department determined that members of the RSF and RSF-aligned militias have committed genocide in Sudan. Treasury also designated seven companies and one individual, Abu Dharr, tied to UAE-based Capital Tap Holding L.L.C., which Treasury said has provided the RSF with money and military equipment through about 50 companies in ten countries. Treasury said Creative Python L.L.C. was used to hide Hemedti's business dealings from sanctions and that Al Zumoroud and Al Yaqoot Gold & Jewellers bought Sudanese gold and moved it to Dubai.
