What happened
AFP reported, citing a security source, that a military court placed PAIGC leader Domingos Simões Pereira in prison on Friday 10 July 2026, after he had been under house arrest since January, as he faces accusations of involvement in an alleged coup attempt in late 2025 (AFP says October; Observador says November), which he is alleged to have helped finance, and of separate financial crimes. Portuguese outlet Observador reported on 24 July that an investigating judge, acting on a defence request backed by the military prosecutor and a medical certificate, authorised him to leave Guinea-Bissau for 90 days for treatment in Portugal, during which he may not engage in political activity. AFP reported that his lawyers and party reject the accusations as arbitrary and politically motivated. Pereira has said he intends to return. The accusations are allegations; no verdict has been reported in these sources.
