What happened
Consuelo Porras ended her eight-year term as Guatemala's attorney general on May 17, 2026 after the US, EU and more than 40 countries sanctioned her for alleged corruption and undermining democracy, including trying to interfere with the 2023 presidential election result. Reporting by JusticeInfo says her Public Ministry pursued President Bernardo Arévalo's Semilla party, which led a judge to suspend its legal status, and purged units handling corruption and war-crime cases; Porras sought a third term and a Constitutional Court seat without success. President Arévalo appointed Gabriel García Luna to lead the Public Ministry for 2026-2030.
