What happened
In April 2025, Brazil's Procuradoria-Geral da Republica (PGR) filed formal criminal charges with the Supreme Court against Juscelino Filho, who had just left his post as Minister of Communications, alleging that as a federal deputy in 2022 he diverted R$7.5 million in congressional budget earmarks, channeled through the regional development agency Codevasf, to pave streets in Vitorino Freire, Maranhao -- the city where his sister, Luanna Rezende, is mayor. The Federal Police had already indicted him in June 2024 for criminal organization, money laundering and passive corruption; the case was sent to Justice Flavio Dino as rapporteur to determine whether to open a criminal proceeding.
