What happened
Thailand's Promoting Peaceful Society Act took effect in late August 2026. Parliamentary estimates cited by the Associated Press say about 6,000 people could benefit from an amnesty for politically linked offences. The law explicitly excludes cases under Section 112, the lese-majeste provision of the Criminal Code. On 26 August 2026 the Supreme Court upheld a prison sentence without suspension for Prasong Khotsongkhram in a Section 112 case, and he was taken to prison, according to Thai Lawyers for Human Rights, which also says at least 31 people remain imprisoned under Section 112. Thai Lawyers for Human Rights calls the amnesty selective, and the Associated Press said observers argue it will not fully resolve political divisions.
