Panama's comptroller removed auditors from a prosecutor's interview in an enrichment inquiry, and the comptroller and Public Ministry blame each other for stalled cases
Subject of this story
What happened
On 9 April 2026 Comptroller Anel Flores and his deputy entered the anti-corruption prosecutor's office and removed three auditors who were being interviewed by a prosecutor about the audit used in an unjustified-enrichment case against a former vice president; the Public Ministry opened a criminal inquiry into whether the prosecutor's work was obstructed. In August 2026 Flores criticised the lack of visible results a year after the Panama Ports Company audit reached prosecutors, while the Public Ministry said the file has 360 volumes and that it awaits an expanded audit. President Raúl Mulino praised Flores and asked both officials to settle their differences.
