What happened
A Kentucky state auditor report released in late March 2026 found the Cabinet for Health and Family Services did not complete health and safety inspections for nursing homes within mandated time frames. Of 190 nursing home inspections reviewed, 162 were late, some by as much as 51 months, against a federal requirement of no more than 15 months between surveys. The audit also found 358 people who had died were still listed as eligible for Medicaid. Auditor Allison Ball said lack of timely inspections posed risks to residents but that the cabinet had begun to clear the backlog; state officials said that as of March 2026 all 268 Kentucky nursing homes had received compliance surveys within the required time frame.
