What happened
On March 16, 2026 the Superior Court of Justice of the Valencian Community unanimously rejected an investigating judge's request to open a criminal case against former regional president Carlos Mazón over his handling of the October 29, 2024 flood, in which more than 220 people died. The panel said there was no solid and objective basis that the facts are criminal, that Mazón was not in the guarantor position required for negligent homicide by omission, and called some of the judge's reasoning conjecture. The Catarroja judge may continue the inquiry to look for new evidence, and she extended it by six months to October 30.
