What happened
Maksym Chernyak, 44, a Ukrainian asylum seeker, died February 20, 2025 at a Miami hospital after a hemorrhagic stroke while in ICE custody at Krome. According to ICE's Detainee Death Report, a nurse responded at 2:32 a.m. on February 18 to seizure-like activity and vomiting; after an abnormal EKG, an advanced practice provider ordered transfer to the emergency room by non-emergency medical transport. At 3:00 a.m. he had a seizure followed by five more, three to five minutes apart, and staff contacted 911; the report does not give the time of the call. Hospital staff found a possible hemorrhagic stroke and placed him on a brain-death protocol. ICE says he was the third person to die in custody at Krome since October 2024; a fellow detainee's attorney described a pattern of neglected medical care, and ICE says it provides comprehensive medical care.
