What happened
Mzia Amaglobeli, founder of the outlets Batumelebi and Netgazeti, was arrested January 11-12, 2025 after a protest in Batumi where authorities say she slapped the city police chief; she denies it, saying he insulted and spat at her first. On August 6, 2025 the Batumi City Court convicted her of resisting or using violence against a police officer and sentenced her to two years. The Supreme Court of Georgia declined to consider her appeal on March 4, 2026, and her lawyer says it did not address defense arguments; the government says the case is unrelated to her journalism, while a Clooney Foundation for Justice trial-monitoring report found numerous fair-trial violations.
