What happened
Under an executive order signed 6 February 2025 the US has sanctioned a dozen-plus ICC judges and prosecutors, according to Al Jazeera. In August 2026 it added ICC President Tomoko Akane and senior trial lawyer Abdoulaye Seye, bringing the total to nine of 18 judges, both deputy prosecutors and the former chief prosecutor, per NBC News. The State Department says the ICC overstepped its mandate over non-member states; the ICC called the measures a flagrant attack on its independence. On 21 September 2026 Al Jazeera reported the administration was preparing sanctions on the institution that would restrict most transactions with the court after a grace period.
