What happened
On 18 August 2025 Hasti Amiri, a women's rights defender and law student, announced that Branch 26 of the Tehran Revolutionary Court had sentenced her in absentia to three years in prison. Front Line Defenders, Iran International and HRANA report the sentence as two years and a 500 million rial fine for 'spreading disinformation' or 'falsehoods', one year for 'propaganda against the state', and a separate fine of about 33 million rials for appearing in public without the mandatory hijab, plus a two-year travel ban and a two-year ban on membership in political and social groups. The court based the propaganda charge on her social media posts opposing the death penalty and on her posts about prisoners in Evin prison. Iran International reports she served seven months of a one-year sentence in 2022 over her advocacy. The outlets' accounts derive from her announcement; the court's own document was not available.
