What happened
María Consuelo Porras led Guatemala's Public Ministry for eight years until she left office in mid-May 2026, after losing her bid for a third term; Gabriel García Luna was sworn in to replace her. During her tenure the Public Ministry prosecuted journalist José Rubén Zamora, detained since July 2022. His 2023 conviction has been annulled, most recently by an appeals court in July 2026 which ordered a new trial, and he faces other proceedings and is under house arrest. The United States, European Union, Canada, the United Kingdom and others sanctioned Porras for alleged corruption and undermining democracy; AFP reports her tenure included efforts to block President Bernardo Arévalo's 2024 inauguration and prosecutions of former prosecutors, judges and journalists. Porras maintains that her actions always followed the law and said before leaving that attempts to discredit her failed.
