What happened
The Alaska Public Offices Commission (APOC), in a 4-1 vote, found that Treg Taylor, a former attorney general, did not substantially comply with the state's public official financial disclosure law (AS 39.50) within the 30-day period that ended July 1, 2026, and on Aug. 27 recommended that the lieutenant governor not certify his nomination for governor. The Anchorage Daily News reported that Taylor had reported more than $1 million in rental income but had not given the full names of his tenants; APOC first ordered him in September 2025 to disclose them, and on July 27, 2026 he uploaded a list showing only first names and last initials. On Aug. 31, Lt. Gov. Nancy Dahlstrom announced she would not certify him. On Sept. 4 she reversed that decision, citing a preliminary Department of Law review that flagged possible discrepancies in many other candidates' disclosures; the department said the review is not a determination that any specific candidate violated the law, and the lieutenant governor said APOC had not reconsidered its recommendation. The Alaska Beacon later reported that many of the problems that review flagged for other candidates did not exist or were minor. Taylor is on the ballot. Taylor told the Daily News he withheld tenants' last names "to protect their privacy," that the statute does not specify he disclose the "full name" of each source, that his tenants and contractors had been harassed, and that he had offered to give APOC the names privately; the Taylor campaign did not answer the Alaska Beacon's questions about the disclosures. The Alaska Beacon also reported that Democratic Rep. Andrew Gray asked the acting attorney general to prosecute Taylor over the incomplete disclosure; the Department of Law did not respond to requests for comment.
