What happened
On May 8, 2025, police in Banjul arrested at least 27 protesters and two journalists at a demonstration by the civic group Gambians Against Looted Assets (GALA), which accused the government of selling assets seized from former dictator Yahya Jammeh at below-market prices and demanded the buyers' names. Police had denied GALA a protest permit. According to AP, police said the journalists and protesters were later released; People's Dispatch reports detainees were freed over the weekend. The Ministry of Justice said the sales went through a "legally grounded process" and were in the public interest.
