What happened
The Council of Europe-backed MFRR mission reported in July 2026 that the Supreme Public Prosecutor's Office cited a 367% rise in physical attacks on journalists in 2025 versus 2024 and opened 140 cases, yet courts secured only three convictions for physical assault, none involving police officers. The report says police gave prosecutors inadequate help gathering evidence and provided no data on disciplinary procedures against officers accused of using force on journalists; the Interior Ministry described police force at protests as adequate. The Committee to Protect Journalists earlier reported no prosecutions from attacks since November 2024 and said the presidency and Interior Ministry did not answer its questions.
