What happened
South Africa's Public Protector is investigating whether Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture Gayton McKenzie breached the Executive Members' Ethics Act by favouring the Patriotic Alliance, the party he leads, after the Democratic Alliance alleged at least 19 PA-linked individuals were appointed to boards of entities under his department (including the National Library, National Arts Council, National Film and Video Foundation and Robben Island Museum), several sitting on multiple boards. The DA separately flagged McKenzie's R31 million delegation to the FIFA World Cup as exceeding Ministerial Handbook limits on accompanying staff. The DA submitted further evidence to the Public Protector in September 2026 asking the probe be broadened.
