What happened
The UN Secretary-General's 2026 report on conflict-related sexual violence (covering January-December 2025) found that during the Rapid Support Forces' offensive on the Zamzam displacement camp near El Fasher between 10 April and 20 May 2025, at least 77 women, 28 girls and 3 boys were subjected to rape, gang rape and sexual slavery, mostly along escape routes. When the RSF and allied militia captured El Fasher itself in October 2025, the UN documented 'widespread, systematic and coordinated' mass and gang rapes in public, primarily targeting women and girls from non-Arab communities, especially the Zaghawa, and people perceived to support the Sudanese Armed Forces. The RSF is listed in the report's annex as a party that has made a formal commitment to address conflict-related sexual violence, a status that did not prevent the pattern documented during and after the El Fasher takeover. Separately, the Sudan Doctors Network documented at least 19 additional rapes of women fleeing El Fasher toward al-Dabba and 23 more among those who fled to Tawila.
