What happened
An ACLU of Northern California analysis of 2023-24 Sacramento traffic-stop data found Black residents, 12% of the population, accounted for 33% of police traffic stops and were 3.1 times as likely to be stopped as white drivers, with about 70% of stops of Black drivers for equipment or non-moving violations and a 17% search rate versus 8% for white drivers. On 16 June 2026 the city's Budget and Audit Committee directed City Auditor Farishta Ahrary to prioritize an investigation into the traffic-stop pattern, which she estimated would take about a year. The police department did not comment on the audit and said it was aware of the report, trains officers in fair and principled policing, and is committed to high-quality services.
