Maldives anti-corruption commission asks prosecutors to charge two companies over the MMPRC graft scandal
Maldives' Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has asked the Prosecutor General's Office to bring charges against two companies in connection with the MMPRC corruption case, which Maldivian outlet Adhadhu describes as the largest corruption scandal in recent Maldivian history. In May 2026 the ACC alleged that the acquisition cost of the island Thaa Olhugiri, leased to Popular Maldives, was paid with illicit funds and decided to ask authorities to repossess it; Popular Maldives said the ACC acted only after the company sued the commission and the court ordered the ACC to respond, and a company official said there is no evidence in the case.
