Franklin County Jail held an immigrant for ICE for 12 hours after he posted bond, contradicting Sheriff Dallas Baldwin's own stated policy against honoring civil immigration detainers
Sheriff Dallas Baldwin has said the Franklin County Sheriff's Office does not honor civil immigration-detention requests from ICE, only criminal ones, but a Columbus Dispatch investigation found that in March 2025 the Franklin County Jail held an immigrant for 12 hours after he had posted bond specifically so ICE could arrest him, and identified other cases where immigrants were held on ICE detainers. Reporting this out on July 13, 2026, Sheriff Baldwin acknowledged to WOSU that his own staff "didn't follow policy" in the case, but Ohio Immigrant Alliance executive director Lynn Tramonte disputed his characterization of it as an isolated incident, saying "immigration lawyers have many different cases where this happened." Baldwin's office did not confirm the Dispatch's broader findings to WOSU despite repeated requests for comment.
